The stress with the stress

Stress is a constant issue, both in private and in the professional environment. In 2020 in particular, the relevance became increasingly clear due to the Covid 19 pandemic and shows the inadequate handling of stress.

The causes are varied and the consequences range from high blood pressure to burnout to psychosomatic illnesses that have serious consequences for business and the national economy. Work absenteeism costs billions of euros and can be avoided through a healthy approach to stress.

A healthy psyche is of fundamental importance in both private and working life. Both areas of life influence each other, so that the psychological well-being in private life has a positive influence on working life. If you feel comfortable in your work environment, this also has a positive effect on life at home. Precisely for this reason, care should be taken in all life situations that mind and body are in harmony.

But how does it come about that, regardless of Covid 19, stress-related illnesses have steadily increased not only in Germany and Europe, but also globally in recent years? Attempts at explanations are complex and range from constantly rising expectations to the ever-increasing flood of information, in which it is less and less clear which messages are right and which are wrong.

However, what if we took more responsibility for this issue? This means the responsibility of each individual who complains about too much stress. It is easy to assign the stress to external factors such as the job, colleagues or the children. Ultimately, however, this only leads to the fact that one evades one’s responsibility and thus surrenders control to external factors. Changing the environment or one’s surroundings is a very bold undertaking and requires a lot of energy. In addition, the outcome is uncertain and not infrequently associated with the realization that it is very difficult or impossible to change one’s environment.

It is much easier, however, to deal with stress yourself and to take full responsibility. What things are stressful in my life? Are there areas of life that regularly and plannable lead to discomfort and increased stress, such as meeting deadlines? How exactly is the stress expressed? Are the symptoms mental like restlessness or constant circling around the same subject? Or does the stress lead to somatic changes such as increased pulse and blood pressure, regular sweats or even a change in appetite?

As soon as we have found out cause and effect, we can become active and consciously do something. Regularly occurring stress factors should first be analyzed and deactivated, because these have a high potency in the long term and can have harmful consequences. It can help to leave the house 15 minutes earlier a day to avoid the traffic jam or to do sport 30 minutes after the workday to switch off and create a healthy mental distance from your private life.
